Summer of Hope Begins

Friday, June 3, 2011
by Scott McKinley
Summer of Hope June began with 82 women, men and children waking up on the floor of Star of Hope's Women & Family Emergency Shelter. When the rooms are full anyone in overflow sleeps on mats in the atrium of the shelter. On June 1 the shelter was full with a total of 331 individuals. 142 were children!

Feeding Houston’s Homeless—Texas Style

Troop 46When it comes to serving and volunteering in creative ways, I don’t think anyone is more creative than the Boy Scouts. Last year Troop 46 donated over 500 lbs. of smoked brisket to Star of Hope Mission. They need your help to do it again this year.

The troop is raising money to send scouts to camp this summer, but they are also giving back to the community. One of the scout parents, Sandeep Seth says, “What's most special about our brisket sale, however, is that we give people the option to donate their brisket to the Star of Hope.”

The scouts will be cooking April 28 – May 1. Visit Troop 46 to get all the details and place your order.

Thanks Troop 46!

Answering the Calls at Star of Hope

Thursday, April 14, 2011
by Scott McKinley
Ann and Brenda from Willis of TexasThis week I had the opportunity to meet Ann and Brenda from Willis of Texas. They were working a shift as Star of Hope Call Center Volunteers. In fact if you call Star of Hope on a Wednesday morning or afternoon, chances are you will speak to a Willis volunteer. About 50 Willis employees rotate through one our Wednesday Call Center shifts every 4 -6 weeks! Amazing.

Brenda said that answering the calls has changed her perspective on who the homeless are and what Star of Hope does. Star of hope is so much more than a soup kitchen serving meals during the holidays.

Call Center Volunteers answer calls from…
  • Families looking for assistance (some who are living in their cars!)
  • Donors needing to know an address to mail a check or a location to drop off clothes or other needed items
  • Individuals, groups and organization wanting to know how they can serve.

Check out Elizabeth Hatler’s update Willis Volunteers Staff Call Center and So Much More! For more on what Willis employees are doing for residents at Star of Hope.

Thanks Ann, Brenda and everyone at Willis who give their time to offer help and hope to Houston’s homeless men, women and children.

Serving Meals in Houston

Tuesday, March 1, 2011
by Scott McKinley
The kitchen at Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter is a very special place for me. I’ve worked with Star of Hope Mission for about six years now, but before that I was a volunteer… helping to prepare and serve meals at the Emergency Shelter.

Dana Tyson, morning DJ at Sunny 99.1 Houston, recently spent a day as a volunteer and a "Secret Millionaire" in that same kitchen. Watching the video brought back some memories for me. Take a look and get a glimpse at what Star of Hope is able to do with the support and partnership of friends in our community. If you are inspired, then get involved and make some memories of your own.

Coats, Jackets, Sweaters...Just In Time

Thursday, December 23, 2010
by Scott McKinley
A few weeks ago I was sitting at my desk when I saw a tweet from Susan Leining (@sleining). Susan is a soccer coach in Santa Fe, Texas and one of her players was organizing a coat drive for Star of Hope. Mary Hunt set a goal for collecting 250 coats for Houston's homeless.

Mary exceeded her goal and yesterday, along with her dad and Susan, delivered over 300 coats, jackets and sweaters to Star of Hope! I'm glad that I was able to be a small part of this effort... seeing Mary's and Susan's updates on Twitter, and helping to coordinate the delivery.

Way to go Mary! Thanks Susan and everyone in Santa Fe who donated. You have helped make this Christmas warmer for Houston's homeless men, women and families.

New Horizons... Getting Ready for Christmas

Thursday, December 9, 2010
by Scott McKinley

Getting Ready for ChristmasThis morning Star of Hope's IT department delivered a Christmas Tree for formerly-homeless families and individuals in our New Horizons ministry:

"New Horizons is the future made possible in the present for qualifying clients who need a bridge from transitional living to total self-sufficiency. The first of its kind in Houston, New Horizons is the road to permanent housing in a mainstream setting for formerly homeless individuals and families re-entering society after leaving Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Programs."

What a great joy to do it. Happy Christmas to everyone at New Horizons!

Virtual Volunteers

Wednesday, August 11, 2010
by Scott McKinley
Around Star of Hope we have a lot of on-site volunteer opportunities. Check out Community Volunteer Opportunities Houston and you'll see what I'm talking about. If your searching for volunteer opportunities we also have a few off-site, "virtual" volunteer opportunities you may be interested in.

When I first began thinking about how I could help the homeless my first thoughts centered around serving meals. It was all about being on-site and hands on. That's what I did and it was great!

Over the last couple of weeks, with all of the Star of Hope news on Houston media,  we have seen an outpouring of love in our community. Friends donating online or giving $10 by texting "SOH" to 20222. Friends calling and emailing, asking how they can help. Friends on Facebook and Twitter are helping us get the word out. Other friends are organizing drives and collecting items that we urgently need. Others are continuing to pray for Houston's homeless... those who are on the street and those who are in programs at Star of Hope. I am amazed and so thankful!

What can you do off-site and at your convenience to help Houston's homeless? I just mentioned some ways. Off course you can do these things without telling us, but let us know and we can help you with some resources. Click on the links below to learn more.
Thanks again for Caring for Houston's Homeless!

Praying for Somebody to Help

Thursday, August 5, 2010
by Scott McKinley
If you missed it on KHOU/11 News last night, you need to watch this video. Got to love what Casey, a gentleman receiving help at Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter says:

“Every day, even though I’m here, I pray for God to give me somebody to help. And if a homeless person can help somebody out, then anybody can.”

Give today at Star of Hope Mission and tell your friends how they can help. It’s as easy as texting “SOH” to 20222 to donate $10.

Thanks for caring for the homeless!

Send a Note of Encouragement

Thursday, July 15, 2010
by Scott McKinley

Donations HoustonWhat would you say if you had the opportunity to share a few words of encouragement with a child receiving care at Star of Hope? This is an opportunity for you to do just that.

Next month children from Women & Family Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living Center and New Horizons will head back to school.  Thanks to the generous support of friends and donors, every one of these children will step onto the bus and into their classroom with everything they need to succeed. New school uniforms, new shoes and a backpack full of supplies!

You can add to their excitement and joy by writing a short note of encouragement for the school age children at Star of Hope. Please take a moment and “Leave a comment” on this blog. We will print your note, along with others we receive, and give them to the children before the first day of school.

Thanks for caring and making a difference in these children's lives!

School Donations Houston: Ways to get involved and help a child succeed:
- Send a note of encouragement to a child on this blog.
- If you receive our July Newsletter in the mail, write a note on the enclosed backpack tag and send it back to us.
- Donate financially to provide needed items and continued care throughout the school year.
- Coordinate a drive for school supplies or other urgent needs.
- Spread the word! Tell your friends about all of these opportunities to change a child’s life.

Star of Hope’s Love In Action Van

Friday, July 9, 2010
by Scott McKinley

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to ride along with Charles Williams in Star of Hope’s Love In Action Van.  For several years Charles has been hitting the streets of Houston and inviting the homeless to “come inside” to find hope, shelter and an opportunity for a fresh start. It was amazing to see how many of the homeless men we talked with know him by name.  As we handed out water, over and over I heard the words, “Thank you, Charles.”

One man, a Veteran from San Antonio, had been in Houston for a couple of days. As we drove him to the Star of Hope Men’s Development Center he told us he was waiting for an apartment to open up and only needed help for a couple of weeks. Someone had recommended not going to Star of Hope, “They’ll just take your name and tell you to come back in three days.” He had been sleeping in a sleeping bag on a floor. That night he slept in a bed!

Many of those Charles invites to the shelter tell him the same thing, “I'll come in a couple of days” or “Maybe next week.”  He patiently keeps going out and continues to invite. “You never know,” he says, “Today may be the day they say ‘yes.’”

Currently, Charles is giving water donated by I AM Waters Foundation. Check them out at iamwaters.com. The foundation has pledged to donate 35,000 bottles of water to Star of Hope over the summer months.

103 Years Ago... New Religious Enterprise on Franklin Avenue

Thursday, July 1, 2010
by Scott McKinley
This morning I was reminded about the beginnings of Star of Hope Mission and the importance of what was then a "new enterprise" to our community over the last 103 years. The Houston Post reported this story on July 1, 1907:

The Star of Hope Mission
New Religious Enterprise on Franklin Avenue Will Be Launched Tonight

The Star of Hope Mission will open tonight in its quarters, 714 Franklin Avenue at 8 o’clock and all are invited to attend and take part in the services.

Dr. D. R. Pevoto, in charge of the mission, stated yesterday that no formal program had been arranged or would be arranged. “We want it to be a spontaneous meeting and we hope that the Christian men of the city who want to see some help extended the unfortunate class who are down and out, we hope that these men will come out and help us in our efforts.”

Services will be held in the mission every night this week. On the first floor of the two-story building occupied by the institution a comfortable meeting room has been fitted up, and here the daily religious exercises will be held. It is proposed to make the mission serve the unfortunate of all classes and as soon as the work can be fully organized, lodging rooms will be fitted up in the second story, a lunch room will be added, a reading room will be installed, an employment bureau will be maintained, and every agency contributing to the physical, mental and spiritual elevation of man will be employed.

The gentlemen already interested in the mission undertaking are earnest and active in their support and are determined to make it accomplish the work that they believe […unreadable…] Houston for it to accomplish.

As was reported in The Post last Monday, Mr. Richard Dowling, who was converted during the preaching of Evangelist Ham here last December, has been secured as superintendent of the mission and will arrive shortly.

Over the past 103 years Star of Hope has stayed true to its mission, expanded services, updated facilities, adjusted to changes in our city and innovated programs. All of us who are part of the Star of Hope community (donors, volunteers, alumni, employees and those currently receiving care) are all part of an awesome legacy.

Visit Star of Hope at Supporting Homeless Shelters Houston for a summary of the many programs and ministries offered today and join the Legacy.
