Perfect Children, Exactly How God Made Them

Wednesday, August 10, 2011 by Katelyn Oliver
As you can well imagine Star of Hope kids have witnessed many things children, nor adults, should ever experience.  Many of them have become early adults who have had to take care of their siblings and even their parents, which is why I am so thankful for corporations who create environments where the kid in the children is awakened…at least for a little while.

Best Buy recently had a Splash Party at Star of Hope's Women & Family Emergency Shelter with slip-n-slides as well as a HUGE blow-up water slide! Every kid had a smile on their face that made their whole little demeanor glow.  They were so happy – they were so childish --- and so perfect, exactly how God made them! Take a look at the following picture and you will totally see joy, silliness, and adventure!  God is so good!

Charlotte’s Lemonade feeds a Homeless Houstonian for Two Weeks!

Thursday, May 12, 2011 by Hank Rush
Charlotte raised money to feed the homeless by selling lemonadeLast week on “National Lemonade Day”, 8 year old Charlotte diligently prepared her lemonade stand for the day, as did so many other children around the country. But Charlotte’s motive was not just about learning to run her business and make a profit, it was much bigger than that. You see, Charlotte was determined to help the homeless in our city with her profits. And she donated not just some, but ALL she made to charity... $65 to the Star of Hope. This will feed one person for two weeks!

All of us who have children, or work with children, know how pure their hearts can be, and how clearly they see the right thing to do so many times. You see, for some time now, Charlotte has seen the same homeless man on the streets, caring for his two dogs…Applejacks and a companion stray. “She does not understand how someone who cares so much for these two animals, does not receive the same care for other people”, her mom said. So she decided to do something about it, on Lemonade Day!

God’s Word tells us in Matthew 18: 3-4: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Are you touched by Charlotte’s wreckless abandon to help someone God loves just as much as he loves us? I am. And if you are, I encourage you to give a gift right now….a gift of $65.00…..and MATCH CHARLOTTE’S wholehearted, all out gift, to help the homeless men, women & children in our city today.

It won’t be nearly as painful for us to give of our resources, as it was for Charlotte to work an entire day and even more, and give it ALL. But if enough of us MATCH HER GIFT, we can make this a Summer of Hope for Houston’s Homeless to find a new life, like never before!

Better yet, feed one person all summer long, $1.60 per meal for 4 months, for just $520. I hope you will give wholeheartedly today, as you are led!

Last Night 52 Homeless People Slept on the Floor of Star of Hope's Emergency Shelter

Friday, April 29, 2011 by John Mills
I wanted to tell you about Charity Navigator, a national nonprofit rating service.  They take nonprofit tax returns (Form 990) and calculate 9 factors which give an overall rating as to the effectiveness of the nonprofit.  They have incorporated written  reviews which have been posted by those who feel that the nonprofit is especially effective.  Star of Hope now has athree star rating (out of four stars) and have twelve reviews posted to the Star of Hope Mission Reviews page. You might be interested in Googling Charity Navigator.  You would need to register but that is an easy process; type in “Star of Hope” and learn how others view  Star of Hope and the work that is done here!   The folks at Charity Navigator seem committed to helping Charities get the word about their passion to the public!

I thought that you might like to know that last evening we had 52 people sleep on the floor at the Women and Family Emergency Shelter (here in Houston).  Thirty six of those were single women!  Typically 40 to 50 percent of our clients suffer from some level of mental illness.  Yesterday we received word that we have been conditionally approved for a grant to provide shelter to approximately 20 homeless and mentallyy ill women on a longer term basis!  This is great news because today’s society does such a poor job of assisting the mentally ill.  Twenty women may not seem like very much, but it is a start!  Mother Teresa said “if you can’t feed 100 hungry people, just feed one”.   I guess this grant is like our ONE!  God bless, and remember: “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward him for what he has done.” --  Proverbs 19:17.  Who would not want to have a reward from the Lord?

Summer of Hope Plans Will Soon Spring to Life

Tuesday, March 15, 2011 by Scott Arthur
Make this summer a Summer of Hope with Star of HopeLast year, actually last summer, we became aware of a staggering statistic. The number of Homeless Families in Houston has almost DOUBLED in the last year. We were dealing with Families in Crisis. During the summer of 2010, Star of Hope saw more homeless at our doorsteps than ever before. Ever ....since 1907! In order to take care of God's broken children and catch those who have fallen through life's cracks, we needed funding, in kind donations, volunteers ...and prayers. The 2010 summer was indeed filled with Hope, Hope we were able to give to our clients because YOU were very generous to our Charity Houston.

Things haven't changed in almost a year. Most folks don't realize that we have more of a need in the Summer than we have during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays.

So we're creating new "Cab Back" advertising and radio ads to remind a busy, vacationing city that there is a real need for continued hope and continued support during the summer months. Homelessness is NOT seasonal. A bad economy, bad choices and bad luck don't take time off. May. With your help June, July and August will be a meaningful Summer of Hope.

In the next few months as you make plans to leave your home for a while to enjoy a well deserved vacation - just give a few moments of thought to a family that left their home a long time ago - with little hope of returning.

Star of Hope Featured in Local "Secret Millionaire" Taping

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 by Scott Arthur
Popular radio personality Dana Tyson (Sunny 99.1) was asked by the ABC network to produce a "local" version of the new national reality TV hit Secret Millionaire. The national version features a millionaire who goes undercover doing homeless volunteer work in a charitable institution. At the end of the show - the "volunteer", moved by the charity and love that he is surrounded with - reveals himself and announces that he is donating to charitable organizations. He then writes a stunned staff a large check.

In the local version, Dana and her camera crew went to a Houston Emergency Shelter - the Star of Hope Women & Family Emergency Shelter. Under the guise of taping a program called "a day in the life of a DJ" Dana joined volunteers preparing and serving lunch for about 100 homeless women and children. A few hours later - as the staff was cleaning up - Dana announced that she was so taken by the hard work and dedication of the volunteers that she felt compelled to help out financially as well. She then presented Star of Hope with a $2500 check from the ABC Network.

Technology and Innovation

Friday, January 21, 2011 by Andrew Holmes

I would like to cover some technology topics in this blog as it relates to charities and missions. Before an organization of any size can leverage technology successfully I believe first and foremost in today’s economy an organization has to promote a culture of innovation and change.  The traditional model of growth, especially in the not-for-profit world, addresses growing complexities of operations and increasing amount of activity by adding labor dollars to the budget and beginning the burdensome process of hiring and retaining employees. Now, employees are great, and most of us are in the “people helping” business so it requires dedicated staff to minister to the needs of your population.  The issues arise when we take these people and have them spend much of their time doing task that support processes that have not been looked at carefully with an eye for technology and innovation.

The first step to change is identifying what is happening now. When you ask for a report from one of your programs, how does it get produced? Do your case workers and counselors have to gather post-it notes , interpret a volunteers handwriting, and work all night to make something look pretty and hopefully close to accurate? Or do they click a button and send you a link to a report that’s easily read and customizable? Its important to identify how things get done.

It would be worth it, if you haven't done it in a while, to set aside 2011 to document what is going on. Start with the core departments like finance, development and work your way to the maintenance department. Once things are identified the proverbial low hanging fruit will stand out and you can make simple changes that have a high impact. Eventually you will want someone, be it a volunteer, a group of grad students that are working on a project or a hired professional to help you identify the innovative changes you need to make that will help you spend your precious payroll dollars wisely.

NCL Heart of Texas Chapter Helps Make Christmas Dinner Special

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 by Elizabeth Hatler

Christmas dinner for families at the Star of Hope Women & Family Emergency Shelter will be a little more like home thanks to the girls in the National Charity League Heart of Texas Chapter. The girls didn’t arrive for their volunteer time at the Christmas Workshop empty handed. In addition to wrapping gifts for shelter guests, they made beautiful red felt table runners decorated with Christmas trees to dress up the shelter’s Christmas dinner.

The table runners, which were designed during monthly meetings, are an excellent example of a creative offsite volunteer project.  What a great way for people with busy schedules to still partner with our mission and be a tremendous blessing to those who are struggling through difficult times.

Angels Call at Christmas!

Wednesday, December 15, 2010 by Hank Rush
Christmastime is such a fun and amazing time here at Star of Hope. Granted it’s the busiest time of the year for our staff, but what makes it so special is the way God works through this Sacred and Holy Season to touch lives all around us!

An “Angel” called me earlier this week, to tell me he wanted to bring a gift to Star of Hope for Christmas. He had bought a cashier’s check, because he doesn’t have any credit or a bank account, so he wanted to deliver it in person. As we talked, I learned he works at a grocery store here in Houston, and didn’t have a car, so he was planning to ride the bus to bring his check to us. I knew right then he was one of God’s special blessings we receive each year for the benefit of our Clients at Star of Hope! You see, he said, “I want to help those less fortunate than me!”

Every gift of your time or financial resources, or of prayers for our Clients, their children, and our Staff, are all “Angel Calls” right from the heart of God. And Christmas becomes Christmas all over again!

You know, I think even Jesus himself shows up here and there, and walks among us… bringing Joy to our Clients. You can see it in the Christmas Programs held here, all the gifts brought by caring Houstonians, toys, clothing, food, you name it…and for just a while, our “less fortunate” become the most blessed and happy people in Houston!

Thanks for helping out at Christmas, and allowing God’s love to flow through you. You are a true “Angel Call” for so many.

2010 Is Almost Gone

Monday, December 13, 2010 by John Mills
The last month of the year is so important to all non-profits, and Star of Hope Mission is no exception. We budget approx 26 % of revenue to be received during the last month of each year. I wanted you to know how we are doing. As of last Friday, we have received 33% of our goal for the month.

We believe that December’s goal is attainable, because we believe helping Houston’s homeless through offering emergency services is too important not to make it! We have 20 days, and only need $1.9 million, to keep this important work going. I hope this year has been a year of blessing and bounty for you and your family. Could you consider helping Star of Hope offer help to those in need during the next 20 days? You can donate online, or you can mail your gift to:

By the way, if you cannot help and you have maybe faced a challenging year, I have just prayed that God, in His infinite wisdom and immeasurable power, would personally minister to your specific needs. I find that His answer is always better than what I could ever think or dream of! Thank you for helping others in need. It is the only way that we have found to make a positive change in the lives of the homeless.

Hope for the Holidays!!

Wednesday, November 24, 2010 by Erika Wise
We ended the day in prayer...20 men, women and children having given "hope" to need families and individuals for the Thanksgiving holiday. What a blessing it is to be a blessing to others.

A group of 18 volunteers from City Life Church, Houston, TX, came to help the New Horizons and Follow-up Staff make 24 Thanksgiving Meal baskets to distribute to families and individuals in the programs.  City Life Church wanted to find a way to do Charity Work Houston and Supporting Houston Ministries.  They found a way to do just that.

Having collected food items which included green beans, sweet potatoes, rolls, and more; the group delivered the food and assembled the baskets.
photo of completed baskets
All 24 baskets prepared...what next??  Some of the residents picked up their baskets--but, we got to deliver some, too.
Volunteers went with staff to deliver the baskets to five of our Follow-up clients. They were so excited to receive this blessing!!

We had a few baskets leftover...what were we to do with them.  One of our New Horizons residents came in and asked if he could give on to his neighbor; another former New Horizons resident said he had a co-worker who was having a hard time.  They wanted to know if they could have the extra baskets to give to these people in need.

What a wonderful thing to see--formerly homeless individuals reaching out to others in need.  That is what this season of gratitude and giving is all about. These two men, Brian and Ken, KNOW what it is like to have nothing and receive grace and mercy.  Now, they were on the other side of the exchange--they were the ones giving!!  They loved it!!

The volunteers wrapped up with day with prayer and said--"We will be back!!"  I love the holidays--Hope always floats up--especially around the holidays.  I can't wait for Christmas!!!!

NBTA - Part 4 - The Final Chapter

Monday, October 18, 2010 by Elizabeth Hatler

Each year at the NBTA trade show, Joe Carino, owner of CARINO Hotels & Resorts, raises money for a charity by holding a raffle. The prizes are awesome – weekend stays at one of his breathtaking resorts and destination airline tickets – and the raffle tickets are modestly priced.   This year, Mr. Carino joined forces with NBTA and selected Star of Hope as his beneficiary.

Several staff members and volunteers were invited to the exposition during peak traffic hours over several days to talk about Star of Hope, answer questions and sell tickets. Not only did we have another opportunity to visit with NBTA members who participated in the volunteer project, we were able to share our mission with people from around the world.

As the convention & exposition ended Wednesday noon, NBTA further blessed us with a large financial gift. The check presentation was made on the trade show floor as Star of Hope President & CEO, Hank Rush, formally thanked NBTA members for their overwhelming generosity.

But it doesn’t end there. After the convention, Preferred Corporate Housing made a sizable donation of urgently needed items such as sheets, towels and flatware. UPS and FedEx continued to deliver boxes filled with school supplies and toiletry care packs. And NBTA members continue to use social networks to share Star of Hope with an even broader audience.

With hearts of overflowing gratitude, we can only say, "Denver, Colorado, prepare for an enormous blessing!  NBTA is headed your way in 2011!"

Hank's Blog : People Just Like You and Me

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 by Andrew Holmes

If you get a chance to read Hank's blog from last week please do. I got a chance to sit in on the video interview and was struck by the two children that are part of this family living at the Women and Family Shelter .  They are such great kids and its heart breaking to think they could be homeless on the streets. I am also taken back by the giving heart of Houstonians, and the safety they provide for these kids and the rest of the families just like them staying in our facilities. (Check out the Youtube video) .

Just a note: I just looked up the Most Giving Cities in the USA and guess where Houston ranked.

Praying for Somebody to Help

Thursday, August 5, 2010 by Scott McKinley
If you missed it on KHOU/11 News last night, you need to watch this video. Got to love what Casey, a gentleman receiving help at Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter says:

“Every day, even though I’m here, I pray for God to give me somebody to help. And if a homeless person can help somebody out, then anybody can.”

Give today at Star of Hope Mission and tell your friends how they can help. It’s as easy as texting “SOH” to 20222 to donate $10.

Thanks for caring for the homeless!

People Just Like You and Me

Thursday, August 5, 2010 by Hank Rush
He had his own small business and a home for his family. As the economy imploded over the past 18 months, he lost his business, and went on unemployment. He and his wife and three children stayed with different family members for a while, until it became too much and they had to move on. No more unemployment and no place else to go, they have sent two daughters to live with a sister in Missouri, and have come to our Women & Family Emergency Shelter with their son this past week for help.

This family is the all too familiar story of “people just like you and me” we are seeing this summer at Star of Hope. It’s tragic how the loss of job and income can take a family through the trauma and tears of desperation and hopelessness. But Star of Hope is choosing to serve all who come our way! Help us make this a “Summer of Hope” as we serve these families and individuals in crisis! And, please pray with us for God’s richest blessings on each one, as we love and care for them through this difficult part of their journey.

Key Energy Services Fiesta Time

Friday, May 28, 2010 by Elizabeth Hatler

Summer has officially arrived for the families at Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter and the Transitional Living Center! Thanks to our amazing friends at Key Energy Services, Star of Hope families kicked off a Summer of Hope with a fun-packed fajita fiesta!  This was the 4th year Key Energy has hosted the end-of-school celebration and no detail was overlooked!

This morning, both courtyards at the Transitional Living Center were filled with sombrero-topped smiles, giggles and laughter as our families played carnival games, posed at the photo booth, scored points at the huge, inflatable basketball throw and jumped in the always-popular moonwalk.   Popsicles of every flavor, buttered popcorn and luscious paper cones of pink and blue cotton candy were just a few of the delectable treats. Face painters created custom works of art as they created tigers, butterflies and superheros. Not only were there pony rides, but our families also visited the petting zoo with sheep, billygoats, a brown baby llama and a 45-year-old, 80+ pound box turtle.

There was even a very special time of pampering and relaxation for our moms, including manicures and chair massages. Make-up artists from Macy’s at Baybrook Mall generously volunteered their time again this year to delight our moms with professional makeovers and goodie bags.

While everyone enjoyed the festivities, a team of Key Energy volunteers took charge of the kitchen to prepare a spectacular feast! At noon, volunteers served fajitas with all the trimmings along with ice cream bars for dessert. Muy delicioso!

We are grateful for the incredible generosity of Key Energy Services and the many hours of creative planning their volunteers spent to make this morning such a whopping success. It gave our families a time to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of the past school year as they shared some south-of-the-border fun. However, the importance and significance of this event reaches far beyond the few hours of today. Many families at Star of Hope don’t have those special, happy memories that bond your family and mine together. Often their lives are filled only with the memories of abuse, addiction, poverty and bad choices. But today that changed. Key Energy volunteers created fabulous memories that will forever bond Star of Hope families together, touch their hearts and give them hope for a better tomorrow! Today was truly a fiesta de esperanza – a Fiesta of Hope!

Give Houston's homeless families hope for a better tomorrow.
