Show God’s Love this Christmas!

Christmas time is such a wonderful time of the year. Everyone’s spirits are joyful! Homes are decorated, and Christmas lights abound! We all love the aroma of Christmas cookies in the oven … and the sounds of a crackling fire in the fireplace. One of our family’s favorite traditions is listening to all the music of Christmas. I don’t remember very many of the presents I received over the years of... Read More »

Young teen discovers a hidden talent

Before coming to Star of Hope, Ty and her mom were living in an apartment together. Money was tight, but they were getting by, living paycheck to paycheck. Ty said she thought everything was just fine. And from the outside, they did look fine. After all, they had a place to call home and were taking care of themselves. But as a young teenager, Ty could not know what it was like to be a mom,... Read More »

Hope for Tomorrow

It is no surprise to me that we continue to see an increased demand for our services at a time when the sluggish economy is impacting the homeless in our city the hardest. The one constant throughout all of this is Star of Hope and our vision to “end homelessness … one life, one family at a time … .” We have been operating at above capacity at our Men’s Development Center and our Women &... Star of Hope Teens Give Back to Houston Community

This summer our teens learned the importance of serving others. Using Mark 10:45 as their scripture reference and keeping with their theme “You’ve Been Served: it’s not about me,” our teens partnered with friends from Kilgore Industries and participated in the local program “Rebuilding Together Houston". Their assignment was to help refurbish a former veteran’s Mr. Gene Dickson and his wife’s... Read More »

Celebrating 108 Years of Christ-centered Ministry!

As we celebrate the 108th anniversary of Star of Hope Mission this July 1 and its calling to serve the homeless of Houston, I can’t help but marvel at how God has used this mission to further His Kingdom in the Houston area! On the day Star of Hope opened its doors, the headline in the Houston Post read “New Religious Enterprise on Franklin Avenue Will Be Launched Tonight.” In his remarks, Dr.... Read More »

VISION 2020: Cornerstone Community℠

Ever since Hurricane Ike and the Great Recession of 2008, Star of Hope has seen a rising demand for its women and family services. Each year since 2008, we have had to ask a homeless man, woman or child to sleep on floor mats because our facilities were already fully occupied. In 2014 we had to make that request more than 51,000 times! In order to meet the growing demand, Star of Hope embarked on... Read More »

"The volunteers here have made an impact, so that I want to go out and serve the community too!" - Ashley, client... Read More »

Running for a Reason

Today I ran my fifth Chevron Houston Marathon. I have been a runner off and on for the past 12 years and have done several different types of events … marathons, half marathons, 10Ks, 5ks and relays. But in all those years, today was the first time I ever cried when I crossed the finish line. I didn’t cry because I had had my best marathon finish ever, finally achieving that long coveted sub-5... Whether it’s a client who has overcome addiction through the New Hope Recovery Program, a volunteer group who donated stuffed animals for the children, or a Circle of Hope member... Read More »
