Before I enrolled in the Star of Hope program two years ago, I told myself all I needed was a job. Even today when I visit the men in the Spiritual Recovery Program and Transitional Living Center, I still hear the same thing. Just last week, I met a young man who had came to Houston from Alabama who also indicated that all he needed was a job.
After listening to the many sermons, talking to the teachers, instructors and pastors and others and finally reading and understanding God's Word, Star of Hope helped me to realize that a job was the least of my problems. My problem was worrying, fear, lack of confidence, hurt, unforgiveness and many other issues that I did not know that I had. I really thought that I was alright.
What Star of Hope help me to realize is to consider the things that I was seeking and worrying about. Matthew 6:31-33 says, "Therefore do not worry, saying 'What shall we eat? or 'What shall we drink? or 'What shall we wear? For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you".
Once I started to focus on God's Word and less on the things that I thought mattered, I began to be released from those things that held me in bondage such as worrying about a job which was just one of the many things that kept my mind in a constant battle. Many people at Star of Hope even told me that God had a job for me, which I could not believe.
I have learned to depend on God. Although I still have problems, I know who to take my problems to. My life now is more peaceful and joyful. And by the way, God did bless me with a job paying over $60,000 per year (including benefits), a brand new car and an apartment within the same month after leaving Star of Hope.
I thank Star of Hope for being there in my time of need for I was thirsty and did not know it. I will always be indebted to Star of Hope. If God did it for me, I am sure that He will do greater things for those who seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness!
