I am the ExxonMobil intern at Star of Hope for this summer. I found out about the ExxonMobil program through the job website at my school, University of Houston – Downtown). Being an intern at the Star of Hope has been such a blessing.
I am so excited to be a working with an organization that is Christ centered. At my previous job I had to be careful about what I said about faith, but here I can openly talk about and share God’s word and help people, including myself, grow closer to God.
This is the first time I have been around homeless people, and it has opened my eyes immensely to what they go through and what their stories are. Before I started, I was honestly a little scared because I didn’t know what to expect. But the people here are kind, loving and very welcoming.
For my summer assignment, I will be working with the school aged children. I have worked with the 4-7 year olds and the 8-12 year olds at Women and Family Emergency Shelter. Both age groups bring something very different to the table. The 4-7 year olds are still in the playing mood and are very excited to be here and learn. The 8-12 age group has definitely developed their personalities and attitudes. But they all have a passion for God and getting to know him. It is so amazing to see how excited they get when it’s time for Bible study and how attentive they are during the lesson.
It has been such a pleasure getting to know these kids and beginning to build relationships with them. I look forward to all the plans and blessings that God has in store for me while I’m here for the summer.
