Star of Hope Featured in Local "Secret Millionaire" Taping

Tuesday, March 8, 2011
by Scott Arthur
Popular radio personality Dana Tyson (Sunny 99.1) was asked by the ABC network to produce a "local" version of the new national reality TV hit Secret Millionaire. The national version features a millionaire who goes undercover doing homeless volunteer work in a charitable institution. At the end of the show - the "volunteer", moved by the charity and love that he is surrounded with - reveals himself and announces that he is donating to charitable organizations. He then writes a stunned staff a large check.

In the local version, Dana and her camera crew went to a Houston Emergency Shelter - the Star of Hope Women & Family Emergency Shelter. Under the guise of taping a program called "a day in the life of a DJ" Dana joined volunteers preparing and serving lunch for about 100 homeless women and children. A few hours later - as the staff was cleaning up - Dana announced that she was so taken by the hard work and dedication of the volunteers that she felt compelled to help out financially as well. She then presented Star of Hope with a $2500 check from the ABC Network.

Because You Love

Thursday, February 17, 2011
by Hank Rush
“Star of Hope in Houston Texas, You're truly changing lives, not with lip service but with hope, love & opportunity, amazing job. Thank You!” @LeighAnneTuohy

Because you loveThese words were posted on Twitter last Saturday by LeighAnne Tuohy, following Star of Hope’s Annual “Because You Love” Banquet the night before. It was our best attended banquet ever with 1700+ donors, corporate sponsors and community partners in attendance. Sean and LeighAnne Tuohy, the couple who inspired the movie “The Blind Side”, were our guest speakers.

This week, we are hearing stories from those in attendance who were touched in a special way by the evening’s activities. We always work to educate and inspire. We want to educate folks on what homelessness is, who it is currently affecting in Houston, and how they can help. And we seek to inspire through videos and live testimonies of clients of Star of Hope… who have seen their lives completely turned around by the power of God’s love and by the opportunity they receive to start a new life while at Star of Hope.

The number of homeless families in our community doubled in just one year, from 2009 to 2010. With your help in 2010:
  • Star of Hope’s family of ministries graduated 46% more clients from our programs
  • 44% more completed and were awarded high school equivalency GEDs
  • 40% more Clients found jobs, than in 2009
  • We also were excited to announce that during 2010 we saw 629 households restored into independent living in the Houston community

All of this could not have been done without YOU, “The Star of Hope Family”…our donors, volunteers, church friends, partner service providers and corporate supporters.

Thanks for all you do in the many individual ways you serve along side of us at Star of Hope. And if you’d like more information, visit www.sohmission.org right now and find out how you can become involved in this exciting ministry in our city!

The 2011 NCAA Final Four Tournament Is Coming to Star of Hope!

Monday, February 14, 2011
by Elizabeth Hatler

Excitement is building as we head toward March Madness and Houston prepares to host the NCAA Final Four Tournament!  Not only will there be lots of memorable, action-filled college basketball, but also special outreaches to those in our community who are less fortunate…..and the kick-off is at Star of Hope!

Feed the Hungry will distribute food to 1,750 Houston-area families during tournament week and donate 250 boxes of food to Star of Hope Mission. A tractor trailer will roll into our Storehouse on March 14th, loaded down with boxes and pallets of food. We need 20 volunteers, age 18 or older, each day on Tuesday & Wednesday, March 15th & 16th, from 9 AM – 3 PM for to assemble and fill 750 boxes.

Through a partnership with Samaritan’s Feet, the tournament will give away 2011 pairs of shoes…..and the first 300 pairs will be given to clients at the Star of Hope Women & Family Emergency Shelter. What an awesome experience as volunteers wash and put a clean pair of socks on the feet of each client before they are fitted with new shoes and receive a care pack filled with toiletry items. Through these gestures of kindness and compassion, our clients will learn about their value and worth as individuals; that others care about them; and that better days are ahead. We need more than 80 volunteers, age 21 or older, working shifts from Noon – 7 PM on Monday, March 28th, to unload and set-up, wash feet, change water, greet, clean-up, and be runners.

Don’t miss out on this tremendous opportunity to participate in the 2011 NCAA Final Four Tournament! All volunteers will receive a commemorative 2011 NCAA Final Four t-shirt.

Sign-up today by contacting Elizabeth Hatler at ehatler@sohmission.org or 713-440-5322.

25 Degrees in Houston

Thursday, February 3, 2011
by Hank Rush
It doesn’t come often, but we’re all finding ourselves in 25 degree weather and on our own “Cold Weather Alert” this week! Heavy coats, covered plants, rolling power outages…and rain and snow on the way before the weekend. Just a short walk from our car to the door for us...but can you imagine what it’s like for those who are on the streets?

Star of Hope is here for the homeless of Houston, and despite our own rolling power outages, our staff is working hard to accommodate and help the overflow crowds who are coming in for help. This is a great opportunity for us to introduce them to the many programs and services that can help them turn their lives around, and begin again. Take a look at some of the efforts that are underway!

We are grateful for the men and women who have made the decision to seek shelter and hope in our facilities, but our hearts are still with the ones on the streets tonight who have not yet reached out to Star of Hope.

Technology and Innovation

Friday, January 21, 2011
by Andrew Holmes

I would like to cover some technology topics in this blog as it relates to charities and missions. Before an organization of any size can leverage technology successfully I believe first and foremost in today’s economy an organization has to promote a culture of innovation and change.  The traditional model of growth, especially in the not-for-profit world, addresses growing complexities of operations and increasing amount of activity by adding labor dollars to the budget and beginning the burdensome process of hiring and retaining employees. Now, employees are great, and most of us are in the “people helping” business so it requires dedicated staff to minister to the needs of your population.  The issues arise when we take these people and have them spend much of their time doing task that support processes that have not been looked at carefully with an eye for technology and innovation.

The first step to change is identifying what is happening now. When you ask for a report from one of your programs, how does it get produced? Do your case workers and counselors have to gather post-it notes , interpret a volunteers handwriting, and work all night to make something look pretty and hopefully close to accurate? Or do they click a button and send you a link to a report that’s easily read and customizable? Its important to identify how things get done.

It would be worth it, if you haven't done it in a while, to set aside 2011 to document what is going on. Start with the core departments like finance, development and work your way to the maintenance department. Once things are identified the proverbial low hanging fruit will stand out and you can make simple changes that have a high impact. Eventually you will want someone, be it a volunteer, a group of grad students that are working on a project or a hired professional to help you identify the innovative changes you need to make that will help you spend your precious payroll dollars wisely.

Why Volunteer at Star of Hope?

Thursday, January 13, 2011
by Elizabeth Hatler

Why do people throughout our community volunteer at Star of Hope? Just ask Ann, a retired social worker, about the benefits of volunteering.

Ann began volunteering in the Computer Learning Center at our Transitional Living Center in 2005. Although she loved helping clients who were eager to learn new computer skills, the timing just didn’t fit with Ann’s busy schedule. She moved to our Women & Family Emergency Shelter where she has been assisting with intake and referrals for our overnight guests ever since. Here’s an e-mail she sent to Latasha Smith, the CLC instructor with whom she worked:

Hi Latasha,

Those lessons you taught me in Excel have come in handy. I am using Excel for a project that I am helping with at the Women & Family Emergency Shelter. Thanks for showing me how to do that! I guess you can count me as another Excel success!  I would not know what to do at all without the lessons you gave me.

Blessings,

Ann

A flexible schedule and the opportunity to learn new skills are only two of the benefits that volunteering at Star of Hope can add to your life as you partner with us to serve Houston’s homeless men, women and children.

Chevron's Human Energy Blesses Star of Hope

Monday, January 10, 2011
by Elizabeth Hatler

Chevron VolunteersRecently, while running errands, my husband pulled the car into a Chevron station. As he filled up the tank, my attention focused on the poster hanging beside each pump, which showcased the many ways Chevron volunteers contribute “human energy” to make our community a better place. Not only was I delighted that local Chevron volunteers were recognized, but also thrilled that Star of Hope was included – both the top, left- and right-hand photos were taken during Star of Hope projects.

We first worked with Chevron volunteers during their 2009 Humankind Week, and thus, a wonderful, new partnership was born. Throughout 2010, volunteers from Chevron’s Black Employee Network assisted in many areas, such as the kitchens at all three facilities and the Christmas Workshop.

During the sizzling-hot, triple-digit, Houston summer, it was a funny sight when several Chevron volunteers arrived for work all bundled up in heavy jackets, knit hats and gloves! But they came prepared to clean the walk-in freezer at our Women & Family Emergency Shelter. While they cleaned the freezer and others assisted with lunch preparations, several more volunteers baked a scrumptious treat. You can imagine the eager anticipation of shelter clients as the aroma of mouth-watering fudge brownies wafted through the air!

Chevron Volunteers at Star of HopeIn the fall of 2010, Chevron groups celebrated their Humankind Week by working on major projects at Star of Hope. Volunteers at the Women & Family Emergency Shelter painted several atrium spaces and cleaned out storage areas. Working in shifts over two days, another Chevron group prepped and painted the iron fence surrounding the perimeter of the Men’s Development Center. Thanks to the generosity of Chevron and the hard work of their dedicated volunteers, we will spend less on facility maintenance and have many more dollars to directly help Houston’s homeless men, women and children!

We look forward to additional opportunities to partner with Chevron and the many other volunteers in our community who have a heart for the homeless. 2011 will be an amazing year as together we serve those in need.

The Greatest Miracle of Christmas?

Thursday, December 23, 2010
by Hank Rush
SOH teens going to college!Well, Christmas is just around the corner, just a few days away. Our blogging team has been posting amazing stories for the past 25 days, of changed lives and personal miracles, here at the Star of Hope. Take a look at our other "25 Days of Christmas Miracles" Updates. It gives me chill bumps to think about all that God does through you, who help and serve here at Christmas, as He uses this sacred time of year to touch unusually open hearts with His Love.

Just in the past 25 days, we’ve seen two sisters, who are teenagers in a family served by Star of Hope for several years now and who are seniors in High School, both accepted to attend college next fall. Both will be attending The University of Texas, one in Austin and the other in Odessa! What a huge blessing for any family, especially one which has had to overcome great difficulties.

Cub Scouts provide 2000 Christmas MealsWe have seen five, 9-10 year old Cub Scouts raise enough money to provide 2,000 Christmas meals here at Star of Hope. See their story in our Star of Hope News Room. The meaning of Christmas to them?...helping others!

At our Women & Family Emergency Shelter and our Transitional Living Center Tree Lightings, we witnessed a chorus of families, recovering from homelessness, sing Christmas songs with great joy and thanksgiving. And our Men’s Development Center Christmas Commencement will be filled with the voices of men singing of God’s love for us through Christmas later this week.

Volunteers have filled our Christmas Workshop and carefully wrapped presents for our Clients, and donors are bringing blankets, clothes food and financial gifts. Parties and gift cards for our teens have been given. Pajamas and books for every 6-12 year old, carefully purchased and prepared by a local company.

Volunteers at Star of Hope's Christmas WorkshopI could go on and on. But what do you think is the greatest Christmas miracle of all? I believe it’s the way God chose to reveal himself to us…through a baby, His only Son…so simple, so heartfelt…everyone who chooses to believe in Him, can receive God’s love and forgiveness, a home in Heaven, and a purpose for their life here on earth. That’s it….God provided for us through His Love.

Thank you each and every one for your help, love and prayers for our homeless families this year. It has been another record breaking year of services in Houston with the economy the way it is. And we have gladly served, with your amazing help, through these times!

If you would like to help us financially, we’re still working to raise the final $1 million of our December goal, so we can continue to provide and serve in 2011. You can click on this link right now and make your donation safely and conveniently.

Blessings to you and your family this Christmas…may you personally feel God’s amazing love, forgiveness, and peace in your life this Christmas!

What's It Like to Volunteer at Star of Hope? Ask Cornerstone Mortgage Company!

Wednesday, December 22, 2010
by Elizabeth Hatler
Cornerstone Mortgage Company at MDCWhat a blessing when ten energetic volunteers from Cornerstone Mortgage Company recently assisted with lunch at the Star of Hope Men's Development Center!  Between 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM, the Cornerstone team enthusiastically worked to prep, serve and clean-up while sharing the Christmas spirit with our clients and staff.

Erich Hoff, a senior graphics designer in Cornerstone's public relations department, describes their experience this way:

"Thank you for allowing our group to volunteer at the Star of Hope, our department really enjoyed being able to help give back to the community.  Your staff was very kind in showing us the ropes and they have a wonderful sense of humor.   It was also wonderful to interact with the clients who are very kind and welcoming.  There’s a lot of love there and it is noticeable when walking throughout Star of Hope.   Have a blessed holiday season, we are looking forward to helping again in 2011."

Thank you, Cornerstone Mortgage, for partnering with our mission!  We look forward to building a strong relationship in the coming year as together we serve Houston' s homeless men, women and children.

Beautiful Blankets to Keep Our Children Warm

Tuesday, December 21, 2010
by Elizabeth Hatler

Every child needs a special blanket with which to cuddle – one that makes him or her feel safe and secure. Thanks to three awesome volunteer groups, the children at Star of Hope have blankets made just for them with lots of extra love.

When you walk through the doors of Dancewear, etc, (located just west of I-45 South on Fuqua), you immediately enter a world that’s filled with tap shoes, ballet slippers and leotards. But venture beyond all of the spandex and tulle into the back room and you will find several sewing machines and fabric squares used by the ladies with Project Linus to make the beautifully patterned children’s blankets.  Store owner Linda Henshaw has directed this project for several years and just dropped off enough blankets to fill every inch of her SUV - barely leaving enough room for her to drive.

Over the years, our friends at ExxonMobil have tackled everything from landscaping and painting projects to huge donation drives and building gazebos. But this was a first – an ExxonMobil group decided to reach out to our children by making fleece blankets. The ExxonMobil Global HR Services team stayed busy cutting and hand-knotting the fabric, and when the project was finished, there were about 250 blankets. Baseballs, basketballs, trucks and tractors for boys. Hearts and flowers and pastel bears for girls. A blanket in every child’s favorite color and pattern!

The women in a Memorial-area neighborhood group, Lots of Knots & Books, Too, promote the love of reading and understand the importance of warm, cozy blankets for children.  Working together, they created hundreds of hand-knotted fleece masterpieces for our children. They hope this donation will encourage each child at Star of Hope to curl up with a cozy blanket and set off on the adventure that awaits him or her in a good book.

Angels Call at Christmas!

Wednesday, December 15, 2010
by Hank Rush
Christmastime is such a fun and amazing time here at Star of Hope. Granted it’s the busiest time of the year for our staff, but what makes it so special is the way God works through this Sacred and Holy Season to touch lives all around us!

An “Angel” called me earlier this week, to tell me he wanted to bring a gift to Star of Hope for Christmas. He had bought a cashier’s check, because he doesn’t have any credit or a bank account, so he wanted to deliver it in person. As we talked, I learned he works at a grocery store here in Houston, and didn’t have a car, so he was planning to ride the bus to bring his check to us. I knew right then he was one of God’s special blessings we receive each year for the benefit of our Clients at Star of Hope! You see, he said, “I want to help those less fortunate than me!”

Every gift of your time or financial resources, or of prayers for our Clients, their children, and our Staff, are all “Angel Calls” right from the heart of God. And Christmas becomes Christmas all over again!

You know, I think even Jesus himself shows up here and there, and walks among us… bringing Joy to our Clients. You can see it in the Christmas Programs held here, all the gifts brought by caring Houstonians, toys, clothing, food, you name it…and for just a while, our “less fortunate” become the most blessed and happy people in Houston!

Thanks for helping out at Christmas, and allowing God’s love to flow through you. You are a true “Angel Call” for so many.

Helping Houston’s Homeless Find The Brightest Light

Tuesday, December 7, 2010
by John Mills

Place of Grace Intake Dedication with Cookie Joe's Dancin' SchoolDuring my eight years working for Star of Hope Mission, I have watched over and over as homeless clients move from virtually “no hope” with total dependence, to beginning their independent walk in a new life.  Star of Hope is not just a Soup Kitchen in Houston!  We offer Christian Ministries with such services as drug rehabilitation, emergency homeless services, parenting classes, career building classes, for homeless persons and for battered women, men and for families.  We offer care for men, single women and for families at our three homeless shelters and transitional living centers.

Last week I got to meet a young woman who lived here at Star of Hope twelve years ago.  When she came here, she was 4 years old, and she got into a ballet dance program offered by a volunteer.  Her family got back on their feet and now she is married and has three beautiful children.  She was present at the opening of our newly decorated Intake area at Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter.  It was a real blessing to visit and to see how well she is doing now.  She and her family had received a chance to get back on their feet, and they had taken it!

I hope that you weren’t ever homeless!  But if you had been, wouldn’t it be great to know that there was a place, where people would listen to you, pray with you, cry with you, and try to meet your every need!  Star of Hope is such a place!

Would you consider partnering with us, through offering a prayer for the less fortunate, and through making a contribution?  You can go to Charitable Donations Houston to make a contribution.

Hope for the Holidays!!

Wednesday, November 24, 2010
by Erika Wise
We ended the day in prayer...20 men, women and children having given "hope" to need families and individuals for the Thanksgiving holiday. What a blessing it is to be a blessing to others.

A group of 18 volunteers from City Life Church, Houston, TX, came to help the New Horizons and Follow-up Staff make 24 Thanksgiving Meal baskets to distribute to families and individuals in the programs.  City Life Church wanted to find a way to do Charity Work Houston and Supporting Houston Ministries.  They found a way to do just that.

Having collected food items which included green beans, sweet potatoes, rolls, and more; the group delivered the food and assembled the baskets.
photo of completed baskets
All 24 baskets prepared...what next??  Some of the residents picked up their baskets--but, we got to deliver some, too.
Volunteers went with staff to deliver the baskets to five of our Follow-up clients. They were so excited to receive this blessing!!

We had a few baskets leftover...what were we to do with them.  One of our New Horizons residents came in and asked if he could give on to his neighbor; another former New Horizons resident said he had a co-worker who was having a hard time.  They wanted to know if they could have the extra baskets to give to these people in need.

What a wonderful thing to see--formerly homeless individuals reaching out to others in need.  That is what this season of gratitude and giving is all about. These two men, Brian and Ken, KNOW what it is like to have nothing and receive grace and mercy.  Now, they were on the other side of the exchange--they were the ones giving!!  They loved it!!

The volunteers wrapped up with day with prayer and said--"We will be back!!"  I love the holidays--Hope always floats up--especially around the holidays.  I can't wait for Christmas!!!!

Homeless Men Help Build Houses for Families in Need

Wednesday, October 27, 2010
by Scott Arthur

A few weeks ago I saw a sight that strengthened my belief in God and renewed my pride in Star of Hope. I watched as homeless men pitched in and helped build a house for a homeless family.

Houston Habitat for Humanity constructs simple, affordable houses for qualified families in need of shelter. On October 12th, this volunteer driven organization invited Star of Hope clients from our Men at Work Program to join their effort in the Fifth Ward for a few days. About a half dozen of our men took part in the project as part of their program’s work therapy.

The men were primarily involved in the construction of the exterior shell of the house which included raising the wall frame, installing sheathing, bracing the structure, vinyl siding, installing insulation and roof trusses. The work was hard and the days were long and hot. The project foreman remarked that Habitat would have been behind schedule if they didn’t have the help from the Star of Hope Men’s Development Center.

During a break, I asked one of the Mission’s workers about the irony of building a house that he wasn’t going to live in. As he answered, he held up a hammer and nails – like another wise Carpenter from centuries ago. He said “This is what I’m supposed to be doing right now. My time will come when He knows I’m ready … and I’m trying to be worthy of that chance.”

As the sun set and the house took shape around me, I realized that these men weren’t just constructing a home for a grateful family – they were building a bridge to their own future using Hope and Faith as their blueprint.

NBTA Project Day - Part 3

Saturday, October 16, 2010
by Elizabeth Hatler

Local NBTA members arrived in their own cars, and buses packed with NBTA members from across the country pulled up to Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center right on schedule. Suddenly, the campus was filled with the neon orange shirts of NBTA leadership and the dazzling red shirts of NBTA members. Each volunteer came ready to work!

Empty one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments were filled with paint brushes and trays, rollers, masking tape and ladders. Volunteers knew they were getting these apartments ready so that homeless families could move in. Other volunteers painted the l-o-n-g hallways on all three floors of the Singles’ dorm, like a college-dorm setting where two rooms share a bath. The bright, fresh coat of paint told clients, “You’re important! You deserve a nice, attractive place to live!”

While most volunteers painted, one or two volunteers worked with our kitchen staff to prepare dinner. And a few more wrote notes of encouragement that were placed in client mailboxes.  These notes will be forever treasured….

“Just wanted you to know someone is praying for you today!”

“Hang in there! I will be keeping a good thought for you!”
When the world says, ‘Give up,’ Hope whispers, ‘Try it one more time.’”

About the time everyone needed a break, the most amazing thing happened – a couple of guys from Chick-fil-A at Holcombe & Buffalo Speedway came through the door with two large coolers. Classic chicken sandwiches, leftover from another event, were an unexpected treat for clients, volunteers and staff members. The timing was perfect!

Re-energized, volunteers not only finished painting the planned areas, but also taped, prepped and painted several other large areas. Their enthusiasm and hard work were inspiring!

As the cars and buses pulled away, taking NBTA members back to the convention floor, we were grateful for such a fabulous opportunity to share our mission with new friends from Houston and across the USA!

The National Business Travel Association partners with Star of Hope - Part 1

Thursday, October 14, 2010
by Elizabeth Hatler

It’s been a year since I received the first e-mail from Jeannie Eisenhart.  Jeannie works for Crowley Maritime in Florida and is on the Board of the National Business Travel Association

NBTA members include airlines, hotels and resorts, travel agents and corporate travel departments, food service companies and temporary corporate apartment homes – just to name a few. Their 2010 international convention & exposition was scheduled for Houston, and for the first time ever, NBTA wanted the agenda to include a community service project. After the Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau recommended Star of Hope and NBTA executives from Washington, D.C. toured our facilities, an amazing partnership was born!

NBTA featured Star of Hope on their website and urged each member’s support. Without a track record, NBTA did not know what the response would be. But they wanted to provide members with a variety of ways to help Houston’s homeless men, women and children:

·         * As members completed the convention registration form, they were asked to make a $10 donation to Star of Hope.

·         * NBTA members were given a list of needed items – such as toiletries, towels, sheets, clothing and canned goods – and asked to make an in-kind donation.

·         * And members were asked to sign-up for a project at our Transitional Living Center – painting client apartments and other living areas, writing notes of encouragement for client mailboxes and assisting in the kitchen.

Deliveries arrived from across the country – large and small boxes of donated items. As our Women & Family Emergency Shelter slept a growing number of adults and children in overflow during the dangerous summer heat, these donations were a special blessing.

We worked with the incredible NBTA staff for almost a year, planning for every detail. And there was a lot of work happening behind the scenes. NBTA secured cash donations from ADTRAV and Continental Airlines. Someone from Lowe’s contacted Werner & Co. on behalf of NBTA. Werner generously donated more than 50 ladders for the painting project. And Aramark donated drinks and snacks for NBTA volunteers.

After such a tremendous team effort, I was eager to meet all of the people from across the country who worked so tirelessly to bless Star of Hope. I wanted to put faces with the names and personally thank each one of our new friends. Project day could not arrive soon enough!

Make plans to serve Houston’s homeless men, women and children.

In Houston, it’s usually difficult to tell exactly when summer ends and fall begins.  The arrival of fall isn’t signaled by green leaves turning into spectacular shades of red, gold, yellow and orange. Nor do we break out our jackets, turtleneck sweaters and plaid wool blankets for Friday night football. For most Houstonians, the arrival of fall is little more than a note on the kitchen calendar.

But the staff and clients at Star of Hope know exactly when fall begins. It begins with the arrival of outstanding volunteers wearing bright red and white ExxonMobil t-shirts. Our partnership with ExxonMobil spans more than a decade and their volunteers share in each client success.

I am happy to report that Fall 2010 has definitely arrived! Red and white shirted ExxonMobil Global Services volunteers spent two days helping out at all three Star of Hope campuses.

Volunteers assisted the kitchen staff with chopping veggies, making sack lunches, cleaning and serving lunch. A few volunteers even braved arctic temperatures in the freezers to ensure they were clean and well organized.

The entrance of our Transitional Living Center got a facelift as volunteers spruced up the landscaping in several areas. While one group worked outdoors, another group of volunteers taught computer skills and conducted mock interviews with clients in the Personal Development program. Not only did the ExxonMobil volunteers help clients sharpen their skills, but they also gave clients the confidence they need for successful interviews.

As we work for national accreditation of our childcare program, ExxonMobil volunteers helped ready the childcare center at our Transitional Living Center for inspection. They painted both the infant and pre-k classrooms a lovely pastel shade of creamy yellow and installed new cabinets. They even built special scaffolding to reach the high ceilings. As if that weren’t enough, they custom-built child-size picnic tables so our little ones can enjoy lunchtime outdoors.

Over the years, ExxonMobil volunteers have worked to make our facilities more inviting and comfortable for Houston’s homeless men, women and children, as well as providing for the direct needs of our clients. Thank you, ExxonMobil, for the many ways you continue to bless our mission!

Homeless Families Double in Houston!

Thursday, September 16, 2010

The Coalition for the Homeless in Houston recently published its 2010 Enumeration of those in our city who are homeless.  Over 40,000 have experienced homelessness in the past year in our city, up 20% from 2009.  With all the Star of Hope has been seeing since spring, it's not surprising that the number of homeless families has doubled since 2009. Now families make up 21% of Houston's homeless population.  The economic downturn has filled Houston's network of emergency bed providers and most transitional living facilities are at or near capacity.  We therefore are finding it much more difficult to find agencies to which to refer families from our emergency shelters.  The system is in gridlock.

I wrote a few weeks ago, wondering if Summer, 2010 would ever end.  I guess you could say the weather is moderating, but we are still sleeping 80 to 100 a night in overflow on the floor of our Women & Family Emergency Shelter downtown, even in mid-September!  This is an extraordinary pattern for this time of year and with the economy still ailing it may be a while until things return to "normal."

As we gear up for the Holidays, please keep us in mind if you'd like to volunteer, do a kids' toy drive or make a special financial gift for our men, women and children at Star of Hope this Thanksgiving and Christmas.  And, most of all, please pray for those who are starting over in the safety of Star of Hope.  God is "At Work" here every day, changing lives, one by one. Come and serve with us, and you will see and be blessed yourself!  I guarantee you'll leave here counting your blessings and will have helped someone through your service!

Is Summer 2010 Ever Going to End?

I’ve been sharing with you and with our community since June about the unusual trends we’re seeing this summer, as hundreds more families have been coming to Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter and others throughout the city, in crisis and in need of help.

So far this year, we at Star of Hope have served 50,000 more meals than we did during the same months last year, and that was a record year for Star of Hope, with over 668,000 meals served! This emergency shelter has been full every night this summer, and in addition, has had large numbers of "overnighters" sleeping on the floor. We have worked hard to serve them well, and you have helped with additional donations and volunteer hours to meet the demands. We are so grateful for your partnership and help!

As I write to you today, we are still experiencing unusually high overflow crowds of 90–100 people each night, double what we say during Hurricane Katrina. As you know, Star of Hope does not turn anyone away, unless they present as violent. These families’ and single women’s stories mostly center around the economy, fleeing of abuse, or the end of "doubling up" situations they have been in where they have shared an apartment or home with another family, and have worn out their welcome.

We seek your prayers for the thousands of individuals homeless in Houston this summer, who are having an especially difficult time with full shelters, difficult job prospects, babies’ and children’s needs, in the absence of any financial resources. We also seek your prayers for Star of Hope Staff, who have the best intentions to serve and help, but are finding this unusually extended economically-driven crisis especially challenging!

If you feel God leading you to help us in some specific way, please respond to this blog or send an email to info@sohmission.org to discuss further.
