Connecting through the written word

Spending time with those we serve is one of the most rewarding experiences in my work at Star of Hope. What a blessing it is to see the transformation that can take place in our clients’ lives when they know people care about them and that God loves them exactly the way they are.

That is the experience some of our New Haven* program clients are receiving through a book club organized by one of our volunteers, Stephanie Tsuru. The book club allows these men and women to connect to each other, their personal journeys and the world around them through literature, much like the way God provides us all an opportunity to connect to Him through His written Word.

The Houston Chronicle recently printed an article about the New Haven book club which I would like to share with you.

As you read this article, keep in mind that the book club, the New Haven program and all that we do at Star of Hope would not be possible without your willingness to say “yes” to God’s call in your life to support those most in need in our community. Whether it is through your time, talent or treasure, you are making an eternal difference in the lives of our clients by providing them the hope they need to end their homelessness.

*New Haven offers permanent supportive housing and services for single men and women who suffer from both mental illness and substance abuse.
